How To Make Easy, Tender, Delicious Shish Kabobs!



Kabobs are one thing that my husband *really* enjoys.  Thankfully, he not only enjoys eating them, he also enjoys helping to make them. So, this is usually a family project.
First, start out with some meat. We usually use beef, but you could use chicken or the meat of your choice. Because the marinade makes the meat really tender, you can use a cheaper cut of beef.  This happened to be sirloin steak, only because it was on sale for super cheap, but cheap cuts of meat do just as good.

Cut them into *small* pieces, as shown below. This will allow it to absorb the marinade well, to prevent it being dry and tough, and to cook thoroughly on the grill.

If you like, add some veggies. We like onion, green pepper and this particular day, we included pineapple chunks as well. Cut them nice and small too, just big enough to not break when you put them on the skewer.  (At least, that is how we prefer them.)

Time for the magical marinade! My favorite is to use fresh lime. If you don’t have fresh limes on hand, or don’t want to buy any, you can also use vinegar. It also does nicely at tenderizing the meat.

Squeeze lime juice into your bowl of meat and veggies.  If you have a nifty squeezer like this one, it is easier, but hands work well too. :)

Now, take your bottle of Worcestershire sauce and sprinkle it liberally over the meat bowl.

Lastly, sprinkle Lawry’s over everything liberally.  Incidentally, ALDI has a “seasoning salt” that taste identical to Lawry’s.  If you don’t like Lawry’s or don’t want to use it, use regular salt.  Alternately, you can add in other seasonings of your choice, such as garlic powder, dill, chili powder, etc.

Stir well so that all meat and veggies have been exposed to marinade. Cover and refrigerate. It is a good idea to take it out every so often and turn all contents with a spoon, to make sure everything is getting coated well.  You should leave it at least for several hours. Overnight is great!  It really absorbs the flavors and becomes super tender that way.

NOTE: The lime juice will literally “cook” your meat, so don’t be alarmed if the color darkens after sitting in the lime juice. That is normal and good.
After your meat have marinated well, you are ready to put your kabobs together.
I don’t think this part needs too much explanation, right? Just…  skewer. :)   (Your children may enjoy helping with this step!)



Cook on your grill for 10-20 minutes, until you achieve the desired “done-ness”.
