Postpartum Bleeding Prevention

With my first child, I had postpartum hemorrhage, which left me feeling terribly weak and could have been potentially dangerous as well.  With my next two children, I also bled heavily, which I feel extended my postpartum recovery time and made it difficult for me to regain my strength.

When I became pregnant with my fourth child, a midwife told me that she had seen very good results with women who did the following during pregnancy:
*Take a load of alfalfa every day. (This is very inexpensive and easy to find.)
*Drink a LOT of red raspberry leaf tea every day.
*During the last 5-6 weeks of pregnancy, take liquid chlorophyll (available from health food stores or online)
I thought it was definitely worth a try, so I followed this routine throughout my pregnancy, drinking about 1/2 gallon of RRL tea daily and taking about 10 alfalfa tablets daily.  At 34 weeks, I added the liquid chlorophyll, starting with 1 tbsp per day and increasing to 2 tbsp per day for the last couple of weeks or so. (It's not the greatest tasting stuff, so just swig it - maybe in a bit of orange juice.)
The difference was *amazing*!
Especially the first 24 hours, I could not believe how little I was bleeding, compared to the other times!  It was SO worth it to build and fortify my blood during the pregnancy so I could have an easier recovery!
One word of caution: If you start feeling better quicker, there is also a greater temptation to start doing "stuff" sooner. Don't give in! Your body still needs time to rest and recover from childbirth and from the pregnancy. The only time I had a bit of trouble with bleeding was when I started trying to lift my 21 month old from his crib and such.  That was when my dh decided that he was ready for a big boy bed and put his crib away so I wouldnt have to lift him *at all*.  So, still use wisdom and take it easy, but I can't recommend this "regime" enough!
